The One Who Got Away
He freezes, like the proverbial deer caught in headlights. The song playing over the grocery store's loudspeakers is from a different time, and so is the tall blonde standing at the end of the potato chip aisle. For a moment his regrets wash over him and induce the kind of panic that has kept him up all night on far too many occasions over the last fifteen years. Then, upon a closer look, he realizes the blonde isn't who he thought she was after all, and the song, while still catchy, doesn't quite tug at his heartstrings the way it once did, and he moves on in search of a bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos. As his breathing resumes its normal cadence and his heartbeat eases back into a comfortable rhythm, he realizes he may never escape the ghosts from his past.
