The Woman

Aidan sat bolt upright in the gondola and stared at the young woman.

She was slim-limbed with long straight hair framing her pale, pretty face. Lips that would crease in an easy smile at the right joke or compliment.

He told himself not to gawk, tried to look away but couldn’t. Were her eyes blue or grey?

He passed her by and a great weight of sadness crushed him. He’d never see her again, but he’d remember her for the rest of his life. Warm tears slid down his cheeks.

Carabinieri fished the girl’s body out of the black water.
