The Empty Room

Why did Mom and Dad give all his things away, all his toys, all his clothes, all his furniture, even his bicycle? We five kids each had our own rooms. And now one was empty. The night he got hit all the other kids and Mom were pale, then in tears, then praying. Dad told me to be a man, now. I already knew he was dead. I had seen him on the side of the road where Mom found him, then run to the house and called the ambulance. Now, only two weeks later, all his stuff is gone. I was going to remember him by that stuff.

He was only seven.

Now I have to remember him by his body lying in the ditch beside the road.
