A Happy Day

It was supposed to be a happy day. The ceremony in the church had been perfect, right down to the lace trim on the bride's wedding gown. It had threatened to rain just before the bride walked down the aisle, but a prayerful intervention by all present averted meteorological disaster. The church being just opposite the groom's family home, all the guests had adjourned there and were presently mingling in the garden, munching on cucumber sandwiches (among other things) and sipping delicate cups of tea (with the occasional wineglass to be seen), while the newlyweds posed for pictures with friends and family amidst the shrubbery. Suddenly, the photographer started yelling and gesticulating frantically in the bride's direction. Unbeknownst to everyone, the groom's pet snake had escaped from its cage, and was now mere inches away from the bride's left foot, preparing to strike. She in turn was startled by the photographer's behaviour, and took an unheeding step backward, crushing the snake's head with her stiletto heel. This turn of events left the groom quite inconsolable for the better part of what was supposed to be a happy day.
