An Impossibly Likely Correspondence

Dear Bob Carlton:

Please refrain from using my name or quoting my work in your stories.

Sincerely,

Bram Chastain

*** Dear Bram:

You do realize that you are a fictional character, created by me, right?

Bob

*** Dear Bob:

That is patently absurd. If you created me, it is because I am, in some sense, you. Either I am not you, and therefore not fictional, or I am you, and therefore not fictional.

Bram

*** Dear Bram:

While it is true that we are, in some sense, con-substantial, I am the whole of which you would be the part.

Bob

*** Dear Bob:

We are both characters in the ongoing story of creation, whether the nature of the Author is that of Purposeful Divinity or Random Text Generating Typewriter Monkey. There are no degrees of unreality. Therefore, I am no less real than you, and you are no more real than I.

Bram

*** Dear Bram:

You are right. Life is fiction. All stories are true.

Sincerely,

Bob Carlton
