Wasted Words

"Let' see what kind of Soldier you are," the guide taking him into the island's rugged outback said as she strapped on her pack. A slow smile spread across her face as she assessed him.

"Warrior, Ma'am," he corrected instinctively, squaring up in front of her to indicate that he was more than ready to show her that and then some.

What he had really wanted to say was "man", "I'm just a man. Take me as I am." But, the reality was he wasn't and she wouldn't. He was a Marine strapped with expectations and she, like others, wanted a superhero.

Swallowing self serving desires, he hiked in silence and did not waste words.
